One of the victims reported to have met the Liberian-American Patrick Sawyer, who brought the dreaded Ebola Virus Disease, EVD, into the country, has died in Port Harcourt. The victim, a staff of the Economic Community of West African States, ECOWAS, was one of the diplomats who received the index case (Sawyer) on his arrival.
Mr. Sawyer traveled into the country two months ago for a purported ECOWAS Summit in Calabar.
Minister of Health, Onyebuchi Chukwu earlier said one of the diplomats that met with Sawyer evaded the ministry's surveillance team and was admitted to a hospital in Port Harcourt. Chukwu said that by the time the fleeing diplomat was found in Lagos, he was already free from the disease.
The deceased is the first death officially reported in Rivers State.
