A former governorship aspirant of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in Lagos State, Mr. Adedeji Doherty, has called for the creation of a Treasury Ministry at the state and federal levels for accountability.

Doherty was a former acting National Vice Chairman of the PDP (South west).

He told journalists in Lagos that the creation of the ministry would curb corruption and ensure a proper accounting system for monitoring income and expenditure receipts of government at both levels.

“Treasury Ministry is the bedrock of accountability of government; it can cut corruption by 100 percent” and “help to make reliable budget. You can never have a substantive budget that is workable if you don’t have information from treasury ministry” he said.

Doherty added that it would engender effective management of the economy, and provide reliable information to the citizenry on how the nation’s resources are utilised.

He allayed the fear that the Treasury Ministry would usurp the roles of the Central Bank of Nigeria’s, CBN, and Ministry of Finance in the economy. He explained that if the “Treasury Ministry is created, Nigeria Customs Service will be restricted to examination, and assessment of goods and revenues collected by them will be paid to the ministry, who will in turn account to the government.”

He called on President Goodluck Jonathan and State governors to establish the ministry.
