President Goodluck Jonathan has congratulated Nigeria’s under-20 women’s football team, the Falconets, for winning the silver medal at the just concluded FIFA Under-20 Women’s World Cup Tournament in Canada. The President said that Nigerians remained “proud of the skillful, highly spirited, and patriotic performance” of the team despite their loss to German team in the extra minutes of the finals.
In a statement by Presidential spokesman, Reuben Abati, President Jonathan applauded the team for out-playing the German side for the better part of the game and described their performance as equaling Nigeria’s best-ever finish in the tournament. He also praised the dexterity of Asisat Oshoala, who was named the top scorer and Most Valuable Player of the tournament.
Abati said President Jonathan stayed up into the wee hours of Sunday to watch the match as he earlier promised the girls during his chat with them on Saturday.
“The President assures the Falconets and their trainers that they will continue to receive all the support and encouragement they require from the Federal Government to fully actualize their world-beating potentials.
“He looks forward to honouring the team with a reception at the Presidential Villa on their return from Canada,” Abati stated.
