Janet Edogba, a 31-year old woman set ablaze by her former lover, is angry that her alleged assailant has been released from prison custody. Last week, Janet, who went from the hospital where she is receiving treatment to the court for her former lover’s trial, was left in a daze when she was told by the prosecutor that the matter could not continue because her former lover has been granted pardon by the state. The alleged assailant, Adesanmoye Kehinde, was one of the 75 inmates pardoned and released in June by the former Chief Justice of Lagos State, who was on the verge of retirement.
Janet wondered how the CJ could free a suspect who was facing trial in court, suspects foul play and has vowed to protest his release to ensure that justice was done on the matter. There are suspicions that the former CJ might have been misled into releasing the suspect.
Janet’s alleged assailant, Kehinde, is a member of the
National Union of Road Transport Workers, NURTW, in Lagos State. Kehinde, who was standing trial
before his release, allegedly poured petrol on Janet, lit her up and fled the scene for allegedly being jilted. Janet suffered deep burns and had to undergo a surgery to save her life
Kehinde was arrested after the incident and charged before an Ejigbo Magistrate's Court for the alleged offence.
During trial, he pleaded not guilty and was granted bail. But while the perfection of bail conditions was still in progress, the former CJ ordered his release and pardon.
