A total of 135 members of the dreaded Islamic sect, Boko Haram have surrounded their weapons around Biu Local Government Area in Borno State, the Nigerian military said on Wednesday.
The Defence Headquarters in a statement said 88 terrorists, and another 45 surrendered at Mairiga/Bun– Yadi and Mubi – Michikan respectively, on Tuesday evening. The latest development have included gains made by the military in the past week, in which some terrorists reportedly turned themselves in. The military said that the terrorists are being interrogated in line with global best practices.
While applauding the gallantry of the Nigerian troops, who remained undaunted and professional in prosecuting the challenging campaign against terror the DHQ said nothing will be left to chance to ensure that the dreaded sect are wiped away. It also commended Nigeria's neighbours who have joined in the fight against the terrorists and assured that it would sustain the tempo until the insurgents are roundly defeated and lasting peace achieved. Urging vigilance from the citizens, the military said the some of the insurgents may want to launch isolated reprisals. “Everybody is required to remain alert to ensure that we are not taken unawares by terrorist elements who might want to carry-out isolated attacks in any part of our country,” it said.
