A 28-year old woman, Helen Essien, has been arrested and charged before Oshodi Magistrate's court in Lagos for allegedly stealing her neighbour's dogs to make pepper soup. She was remanded in prison custody at Kirikiri, Lagos. Helen, who hails from Akwa Ibom State, runs a beer parlour and dog pepper soup joint at Ajao Estate. She reportedly went to Andrew Ozo's house at Aimasiko street Afaragun Street, Oshodi, and asked him to sell his three dogs to her. Ozo, however, turned down the request. According to Ozo, the following day, the dogs were missing. He said, he hurriedly went to the Helen's bar and found her and her workers busy preparing dog pepper soup. Ozo said he confronted her, but she denied seeing his dogs. He went to Makinde Police Division and reported the matter. Helen was arrested. At the station, Helen admitted that she went to Ozo’s house to check the dogs and denied that she stole the dogs as Ozo claimed. She explained that her dog got missing and he went to Ozo's house to check her dog, pretending that she wanted to buy the dogs. When she was arraigned, she pleaded not guilty. The presiding magistrate, Mr A.A. Fashola granted her bail in the sum of N200,000 with two sureties in like sum. She was remanded pending when she will perfect her bail. The matter was adjourned till 21 October 2014.
