Jorge Mendes is not a name known to many football followers, but he is an important man, a very important one, in the world of football. Mendes, a former nightclub owner, was the biggest player in the 2014 transfer window. He oversaw the sale of five high-profile clients (four of them signed by English clubs) and negotiated combined fees of £228 million.
Mendes’ Gestifute Agency, facilitated the transfers of Radamel Falcao and Ángel di María from Monaco and Real Madrid respectively to Manchester United in deals that could eventually exceed £90 million.
He was also the man behind transfer of James Rodriguez, the Colombian World Cup star, from Monaco to Real Madrid for £63 million. Manchester City signed Eliaquim Mangala from Porto in a deal understood to be worth £43 million. Diego Costa, who moved to Chelsea from Atlético Madrid for £32 million, is also a Mendes client.
Mendes also represents Jose Mourinho, Cristiano Ronaldo, Ricardo Carvalho, Raul Meirelles, Bruno Alves and Nani among many others.
Mendes moved into player representation in 1996, after spells as a DJ, video store proprietor and nightclub owner.
His company now has player assets worth billions. He made a reported £10million from Ronaldo’s £80 move from Manchester United to Real Madrid.
