A 63-year old man, Sylvester Okafor, has been remanded in prison custody after he failed to produce his grandson, Christopher Chukwunonso, for whom he stood as surety in court in Lagos.
The court ordered his arrest after repeatedly failing to produce the suspect in court as demanded. The grandson was arraigned before Isolo Magistrate's Court for an alleged criminal offence.
He pleaded not guilty and was granted bail. Okafor stood as surety for him and promised to produce him on demand by the court. Chukwunonso was released on bail. But after his release from prison custody, he fled and his family claims not to have seen him since then.
The court had adjourned the matter on several occasions, in the hope that he would make an appearance, but he never did. The court had to summon Okafor to produce Chukwunonso, as he had promised. He told the court that his grandson fled after his release from prison custody.
Consequently, the court, presided over by Magistrate K.B. Ayeye, ordered his arrest and detention at the Kikiri Prison, Lagos.
He is facing a charge of criminal contempt of court for his failure to produce his grandson.
