Dr. Shem Zagbai of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has won the Niger-East Senatorial by-election after a rerun was conducted.
Zagbai was declared winner by the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, today
Following the inconclusive by-election of August 30, due to alleged electoral malpractice, a rerun was conducted in Bosso, Chanchaga, Munya, Paikoro, Rafi and Shiroro local government areas yesterday.
Announcing the results in Minna, Prof. Morenikeji Olakonmi, who served as the Returning Officer, said that Zagbai scored 92, 056 votes, while David Umaru of the All Progressives Congress, APC, came second with 87, 405 votes.
Other results include 2,185 by Isa Bello of All Progressives Grand Alliance, APGA, and Mr Abdulahi Diko of Social Democratic Party who scored 419 votes.
Declaring Zagbai as the winner, the Returning Officer said: “We have come to the conclusion of the collation. I certify that I was the Returning Officer for Niger East Senatorial District by-election held on the 6th day of September 2014.
“That Dr. Shem Zagbai of the PDP, having satisfied the requirements of the law and scored the highest number of votes, is hereby declared the winner,” he said.
