Ribadu, 7 Others Pull Out Of Adamawa PDP Primaries

Former chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, has withdrawn from the  Adamawa State Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, governorship primaries fixed for tomorrow. Seven other aspirants have also agreed to quit the race for the party’s ticket. The are Auwal Tukur, Aliyu Idi Hong, Andrawus Sawa, James Barka,  Gen. Aliyu Kama, Markus Gundiri and Abubakar Girei.

Their withdrawal came after a four-hour meeting, which started on Thursday night and ended about 1am on Friday. At the meeting, which held at the Banquet Hall of the State House, Senate President, David Mark and other top party officials succeeded in getting the aspirants to agree that their number be pruned to six.

Speaking with reporters after the meeting, Chairman of the PDP in Adamawa State, Joel Madaki,: “Fourteen aspirants contesting for the position earlier have now been reduced to six aspirants due to this meeting. It is a very welcome idea. Nobody was forced to step them. Those who stepped down did so voluntarily in order to wait to contest for the position in 2015.”

Those still in the race are  Ahmed Gulak, Buba Marwa, Ahmed Modibbo, Dr. Umar Ardo, acting Governor Umaru Fintiri, and Jerry Kumdisi.

It was said to have been agreed that the six aspirants that will contest on Saturday will not seek the office in 2015.

The meeting also agreed that only those stepping down now can contest for the party’s governorship election ticket in 2015, with more consideration in 2015 for Adamawa Central that has never produced a governor.

Any aspirant who fails to win the party’s ticket in Saturday’s primary election, the meeting, also agreed must support the party’s flag bearer towards the election fixed for 11 October

Those who attended the meeting included the PDP National Vice Chairman, Uche Secondus; Special Adviser to the President on Political Affairs, Rufai Alkali; Governors

Ibrahim Dankwambo (Gombe) and Isa Yuguda (Bauchi); and Secretary of the Adamawa state PDP, Barrister Ati Shehu.

The governorship seat in the state is being contested because of the  Alhaji Murtala Nyako.
