The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Southwest zone, has removed Mr. Ishola Filani as its caretaker chairman after passing a no-confidence vote on him. Filani’s sack was announced through a communiqué issued by 12 members of the zonal executives of the party, on Wednesday, in Ibadan.
The removal of Filani, who was appointed to office after the court-backed ouster of former PDP Zonal Chairman, Segun Oni-led executives, is expected to precipitate a crisis among partymen in the zone.
The rebelling members accused Filani of highhandedness and negligence, particularly his not summoning regular executive meetings.
Filani feigned knowledge of his removal, while stating that he was expecting the partymen at a meeting today, Thursday. He deplored his removal as a nullity, and stated he had not committed any offence to warrant such action. Filani admitted that the party’s executive meeting holds fortnightly , but said it was not constitutionally mandatory.
Lanre Orimoloye, the exceutive’s zonal treasurer, has been appointed acting chairman.
Watchers have claimed changing power calculus within the zonal PDP, as defined by Southwest contact Chairman, Kashamu Buruji, and Ekiti State Governor-elect Ayodele Fayose may have necessitated the pole shift against Filani.
