Traders Weep Over Onitsha Main Market Inferno

A mysterious fire, Tuesday night, razed down the Bright Street section of Onitsha Main Market, with goods worth millions of naira destroyed.

The fire which started at about 9.45 pm on the first floor of one of the buildings destroyed some warehouses allegedly stocked with chemicals, rice, chemicals and some spiritual materials. The ground floor of the complex was unaffected.

Some night guards around the neighbourhoods saw smoke coming out from one of the shops and alerted the chairman of the street traders, Ifeanyi Chukwudum, who contacted the police for the dispatch of some policemen.

At the scene of the incident, fire fighters from Onitsha Main market and their counterparts from Okpoko Fire Service Station were on ground to contain the inferno.

No casualty was recorded even as the cause of the inferno is yet unknown.

Two fire officers were said to have sustained injuries while attempting to put out the fire.
