A high-profile group in Benin, Edo State, the Benin Leaders of Thought, BLT, has alleged of a deliberate plot to disenfranchise voters of Benin origin, located in Benin South Senatorial district. The group, which include traditional leaders and led by the Oba of Benin Kingdom, Omo’N oba Ereduiwa, accused the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, of being behind the plot.

BLT claimed that the party has planned to manipulate the distribution of Permanent Voters Cards by the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, to the disfavour of Benin people, who are majority in the state. The allegation was made on the group’s behalf by Enogie of Obazuwa, who is a younger brother to the Oba Ereduiwa, Prince Edun Akenzua. Akenzua added that the plan was to enable the PDP take over the government in the state in future election, a plot it said was particularly targeted at his kinsmen.

Akenzua claimed similar thing was done by the party to win it electoral victory in Ekiti State.

“ We are told that was how it happened in Ekiti where, they said, more than 200,000 voters were disenfranchised. While their wards perform these theatrics here in Benin, the Master-fixers are busy in Abuja, planning the strategy with which their party will up-stage Edo South voters," he said.

Akenzua said the party’s henchmen ensured that Benin politicians were divided in the past, and behind their non-representation in the current Federal Government cabinet of President Goodluck Jonathan.
