New York Deputy Police Chief Kim Royster said Sata was treated at his hotel by U.S. State Department doctors on Thursday and then taken to a hospital. She had no details on his condition.

Sata, who is about 77, became Zambia’s fifth President in 2011 after three failed attempts. He is known as a staunch advocate for the poor and an opponent of Chinese investment in Zambia’s mines.

Sata went to Israel for medical treatment in June.
