Morocco’s Minister of Youth and Sports, Mohamed Ouzzine, says that the country wants the 2015 African Cup of Nations postponed due to the outbreak of Ebola Virus Disease, EVD.
It was reported over the last few days that the nation’s leadership had contacted the Confederation of African Football, CAF about postponing the tournament because of the deadly Ebola Virus Disease, EVD that is currently sweeping the world, with them not willing to risk people’s lives.
CAF moved quickly to respond to the request, saying that they had no plans to move the tournament, which has never been postponed in its entire existence.
They did, however, explain that they would be in direct contact with the World Health Organisation in order to plot the way forward.
Ouzzine though, remains steadfast. He told Medias 24, “The response of CAF is not convincing. The AFCON has never been postponed, it’s true, but at the same time, we never had Ebola. We are currently in contact with Issa Hayatou, and will hold a meeting with him or to try to find a solution, we are not prepared to jeopardise the health of Africans. We rely on the wisdom of CAF.”
