Police Rescue Kidnapped Teacher In Delta, Kill Suspect

The Police in Delta State, South-South Nigeria, said it killed a kidnapper, while other members of the gang escaped, during an encounter to rescue a captive held by them, on Monday. The incident reportedly occurred at Utiuyo, Okpara, in Ethiope East Local Government Area. Celestina Kalu, a deputy superintendent and spokesman for the Delta Police Command, said they were alerted through a distress call from the Divisional Police Officer of Isiokolo Division, Iwok Ndifereke, that Abemu Gabriel, a teacher, was kidnapped by the hoodlums around Okpara rail line. Soon after, Kalu said, all exit routes were blocked to prevent escape, after which “The patrol team caught up with them at Utiuyo village in Okpara where the criminals opened fire on sighting the policemen. In the ensuing gun battle, one of the hoodlums was fatally wounded while the rest escaped. The victim was rescued.”
