The Nwabueze Okafor-led management committee of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria, ALGON, recently sacked by a Federal High Court in Abuja following an order made by the court reverting the leadership of the association to the position as at March, 2013, were on Thursday removed from the ALGON office in Abuja by a team of Nigerian Police officers led by the chairman of the association's board of trustee, Hon. Kassim Ibrahim.
The Registered Incorporated Trustees of ALGON had dragged the Okafor-led executives before the court wherein it sought for, amongst others, an order of interim injunction restraining the Okaor-led executives from parading themselves as officers, executives or representatives of the association as well as an order restraining them from either taking steps to declare any office of ALGON vacant or call for the purchase of forms for any elective office of the association or call for any election to any offices of ALGON pending the hearing and determination of their motion on notice.
While ruling on the suit which the Registered Incorporated Trustees of the association instituted alongside the BoT Chairman and some serving local government chairmen, the trial judge, Justice Abdu Kafarati ordered that the status of the leadership of the association should revert to what it was as at the time the suit was instituted last year and that the order will remain pending the duration of the proceedings in the suit.
The Okafor-led executive is made up of persons who are no longer Local Government Chairmen contrary to the provisions of the association's regulations.
Upon the taking over of the offices of the association, the BoT Chairman immediately inaugurated a 7-man interim management committee led by Dr. Emmanuel Loman, the Plateau State ALGON chairman, who also represents the North Central geopolitical zone of the country. Others are Prince Cornelius Nnaji, the Chairman of Enugu State ALGON as deputy chairman and representative of South East in the interim management committee, Khalid Ibrahim, Chairman of Jigawa ALGON as treasurer and representative of North West, C. Olarenwaju, Delta state ALGON chairperson as financial secretary and representative of South South, Maina Gana, Yobe state ALGON chairman as Auditor and representative of North East, Olarenwaju Ibrahim, Chairman of ALGON in Osun State as Publicity Secretary and representative of Southwest and Barrister Amodu Okandeji, Chairman of Kwara State chapter of the association as legal adviser and representative of North Central while Dr. Ted Edwards will temporarily assist the interim management committee as Secretary General pending the election of a substantive one.
The interim management committee was mandated to run the activities of the association for the next 30 days within which time they are expected to conduct election for the purpose of electing substantive executives to pilot the affairs of the association. The election is to be by serving Local Government chairmen as provided by the constitution of the association.
The BoT chairman, Hon. Kassim Ibrahim, berated Okafor for unilaterally and in contravention of laid down rules and regulations of the association, alienating the properties of ALGON and embezzling the proceeds there.
