A post promoting former Minister of State for Defence, Musiliu Obanikoro, with a picture of protesters taken during a rally against tuition hike at the Lagos State University, LASU, has generated a backlash against the politician. The said picture, one of a variety, titled ‘Greater Lagos’, with a similar hashtag is prominently displayed on Obanikoro’s twitter handle@MObanikoro.
But a certain Ewebiyi Keye James believes the former Nigerian envoy to Ghana is merely attempting to reap where he did not sow. James deplored Obanikoro for attempting to take credit for the students’ cause. James, a former student of LASU according to his facebook profile, wrote: “Senator Musilu Obanikoro has released his dogs on twitter to bark and bite any anti-Obanikoro handle…join the campaign to force him to drop the #SaveLASU photo from his campaign banners.”
James added that Obanikoro “does not deserve any credit for the success of the fee hike struggle. He does not represent the ideals and ideas that the struggle stood for.” James described Obanikoro’s action as “crass opportunism,” urging other people to be part of the #pullitdown campaign.
Obanikoro has said he would take another shot at Lagos State governorship race. He contested the office, but lost to Governor Babatunde Fashola in 2007. Obanikoro’s political rise began when he was elected chairman, Lagos Island Local Government, and after which he was appointed Commissioner for Home Affairs and Culture by ex-Governor Bola Tinubu. He later became a senator of the defunct Alliance for Democracy in 2003, before defecting, alongside late Wahab Dosunmu, to the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.
