There are claims the Presidency and the national hierarchy of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has perfected a plan to stop senators planning to remove President Goodluck Jonathan in their tracks. PUNCH newspapers, quoting a presidency source, said Jonathan had begun talking to senators who are aggrieved over the party’s refusal to grant them automatic tickets. The newspaper source played up Jonathan’s intervention in Cross Rivers and Ondo chapters of the party last week as evidence of such moves. The source said the moves would stem the tide of impeachment, while it will ensure the PDP go into next year’s election united.

Media reports, as at last count, pegged the number of senators who endorsed the impeachment plot at 63. Senators from the PDP are supposedly predominant among the plotters. The evidence that the plot was not a smokescreen afterall came with the admonition from the Presidential Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Doyin Okupe to the warring senators. Okupe advised the senators to focus on issues of governance, and not impeaching the president.
