The Deputy Governor of Sokoto State, Mukhtar Shagari, has described his crushing defeat at the governorship primaries of the party held in the state as “outright illegality”, and called for its cancellation. Shagari secured one vote, losing to a former Nigerian Ambassador to Morocco, Abdallah Wali, who polled 547 votes. Two other aspirants, Abubakar Gada got 193, while a former Minister for Sports, Yusuf Suleiman, pulled out of the contest before the election. Shagari had protested the composition of the delegates list, but couldn’t stop the primaries from taking place. The result of the election was announced by the chairman of the election panel, U. U. Kumo, on Tuesday. Shagari had refused to defect with Governor Aliyu Wammako to the All Progressives Congress, APC, and had hoped the PDP ticket would be there for him to take.
