Armed thugs, suspected to be working for the Peoples Democratic Party in Rivers State, early morning on Saturday, destroyed sound equipment and canopies set up for the All Progressives Congress governorship rally that was to hold in Okrika Local Government Area. The armed youths were also said to have shot sporadically at people inside the National School field chosen for rally. The same school was used for the PDP governorship rally last week without any hinderance. Okirika is also where President Jonthan’s wife, Patience, hails from and was at the PDP rally where she campaigned for the party’s candidate, former education minister, Nyesome Wike. APC Chairman in Okrika, Christian Asifamaka, in a statement said the shooting began at about 3.45 a.m. The podium was also destroyed due to dynamite thrown at it by the thugs, Asifamaka said. “Those setting up the sound system and the podium were forced to flee for their lives…the boys came in a white Hiace bus and allegedly came in from Igbiri, a community that shares borders with Mrs. Jonathan’s Oba Ama community,” Asifamaka stated. Adding to Asifamaka’s statement, Rivers State Commissioner for Information and Communication, Ibim Semenitari, said the youths unleashed mayhem unchallenged. Semenitari stated that the armed youths increased in number and went about their destruction without the police stopping them. “Some more boys came and started destroying things at the venue in Okrika again. The police, who were coming with APC (Armoured Personnel Carrier), drove off. We are without any security and are under siege in Okrika. This is our situation as of now,” she stated.
