Buhari Will Stop Secrecy In NNPC Operations

The Directorate of Media and Publicity of APC presidential campaign, has said its candidate, Muhammadu Buhari, will change the secrecy surrounding the operations of the Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation, NNPC, if elected president in next month’s election. In a press statement issued by the campaign director, Garba Shehu, on Tuesday, the campaign media office said corruption, lack of transparency and honesty are responsible for how the NNPC is currently run. It said it was also the reason “the countrys economy comes under heavy shock any time there is instability in the global oil market.” To insulate the country from negative effects of oil price fluctuations, the statement said Buhari would ensure “comprehensive review of the entire petroleum revenue collection and reporting system to ensure full disclosure and accountability to Nigerians; create a level playing field for all investors, operators and service providers in the oil and gas sector and reduce wastage and improve efficiency to ensure maximization of government revenue. Shehu said Buhari will ensure credible book-keeping in the running of the NNPC, among other things. “To create a level playing field for all operators and investors in the oil and gas industry, there is an urgent need to have a clear and transparent regulatory and fiscal framework for the upstream, midstream and downstream activities,” he said. Shehu said Buhari will bring the various reforms on the running of the organisation to bear on how its organs work, in line with international best practices. The APC said it was dismayed that the reforms have brought about nothing because the Jonathan administration lacked commitment and political will.
