A Muslim employee, Lassana Bathily, 24, of Kosher grocery is to be granted French citizenship for saving the lives of shoppers at last week’s siege in Paris.

Bathily, originally a Malian shepherded terrified customers to safety in a switched-off refrigerated storeroom to avoid Amedy Coulibaly, the Islamist gunman who shot dead three customers at an attack on the Hyper Kasher supermarket.

Bathily became an instant hero for his bravery, and considered for French citizenship after over 240,000 people backed an internet petition calling on the government to confer the Legion d’Honneur decoration on him and also nationalise his identity.

Bernard Cazeneuve, the France Interior Minister, on Thursday announced the government’s decision to heed the petition and make Bathily a citizen.
