Nigerian Refugees In Chad Now 10,000 – UN

The UN refugee agency said some 7,300 Nigerian refugees have fled to  Chad in the last 10 days. Spokesman for the agency, Farthan Haq, made the statement in Abuja on Saturday. The total figure of refugees in the land-locked country has increased to 10,000, Haq said.
Haq said that the newly arrived refugees in Chad are staying with local communities in villages some 450 kilometers north-west of the Chadian capital, Ndjamena.
“The UN refugee agency teams in Chad are at the border and seeking more information on the new arrivals and their needs,” Haq said.
Haq said that the Chadian government has equested the assistance of aid agencies to help the refugees. Haq stated that the figthing in Nigeria’s northeast has displaced 135,000 people “with at least 850,000 people displaced within Nigeria.”
