Having been pushed out of Maiduguri, Borno State, suspected Boko Haram fighters, Monday went on rampage in Michika, killing residents and burning down buildings, witnesses said.
The attackers stormed the town with sophisticated weapons and shot indiscriminately at residents, a military source said. The source, said government forces were quickly deployed to contain the carnage and cordon off the area.
A youth leader in the area, who craved anonymity said casualties might be higher because the attackers had wreaked havoc in the area before the arrival of security operatives. Monday’s attack occurred 24 hours after scores of Boko Haram militants were killed in a massive attack, launched by the group but repelled by the Nigerian Army.
Many of the militants who attacked Maiduguri, Sunday were also captured with wounds, according to a statement by the Nigerian defense headquarters. Boko Haram had recently taken over some cities in Nigeria’s northeastern region. The militant group has killed thousands of people in its five-year insurgency in Nigeria.
