'... why they can't be champion'
Jose Mourinho, Chelsea manager, delivered a brilliant speech during the club's Player of the Year awards Wednesday, mocking his team's rivals Arsenal, Manchester United and Manchester City. Having taken to the stage to raucous whoops and cheers, Mourinho re-iterated his belief that "I don't think my players got the respect they deserve" for winning the Premier League title, before mocking those that finished below them in the top four.
With the aid of big-screen graphics, Mourinho told the audience: "Now I have a fiction story and let's try to enjoy it", and with that turned his attention to Manchester United. The screens related to Chelsea's 1-0 win over Manchester United at Stamford Bridge in April, a game in which Manchester United enjoyed 70 per cent possession but lost due to Eden Hazard's 38th minute strike.
"This is a game with two goals, but there is one team that like to play without the ball," said Mourinho.
"That team plays really well and the ball goes and goes and goes and the quality of the ball possession is good, but they don't score. No points.
"They asked the Fifa committee if they can win like this but they're told it's not possible. That the bigger possession is not essential to win matches and they are not champions.'
The former Real Madrid manager then turned his attention to Manchester City, picking up on the fact Manuel Pellegrini's side had the worst defensive record among the top four teams.
"Then, there is another team. Only with one goal," he said. "And they score a lot of goals, from players in every position, and they score and they score and they score.
"But they never concede a goal because there's no goal. They speak to Fifa and they say they can't be champions because there is only one goal."
"They were scoring some, they were also conceding some. But they were fantastic, they score some really beautiful goals. They were almost there.
"But they asked the international board to play only between January and April. And they told 'no chance, no chance'.
"You have to play between August and May, so they couldn't be champions.
