Angry parents parents have petitioned the presidency and ministry of education over alleged “extortion and exploitation” by principal of the Federal Government College, Efon Alaaye, in Ekiti state, Grace Ogunyomi. The parents accused Ogunyomi of extorting “unapproved fees” from them. They cited a memo by Ogunyomi stating increment in the school’s fees. Signed by chairman of the parents’ body, Tolu Ajibade and its secretary, Paul Omotayo, the petition accused the principal of taking a unilateral decision without recourse to the education ministry.
“We also have in our custody a recent circular from the Federal Ministry signed by the Director, Department of Secondary Education, Mr. D.C Uwaezuoke and dated June 23, 2015 stating details of approved fees payable by students, but which the Principal has continually ignored”, the petition stated.
“We want Mr. President and the Ministry to act fast so that his good vision of transforming the education sector and make it affordable and accessible is not truncated by the activities of elements such as the principal of our children’s school.” They urged the ministry of education to institute a monitoring unit on released funds to the school, while demand refund of “all unlawful and unapproved fees collected by her should be refunded immediately to guarantee existing peace between the concerned parents and the principal.”
