The Nigerian Army says it killed many insurgents during a fierce battle in Gwoza, Borno State. Sani Usman, a colonel, acting director of army public relations, said in an email to journalists on Wednesday. He said the insurgents were killed while trying to escape the bombardment of Sambisa Forest by fighter jets. They were said to have run into their deaths while escaping on seven pick-ups and motorcycles ‘mounted with assorted weapons such as rocket propelled grenades and anti-aircraft guns’. A vehicle, one motorcycle and two AK 47 rifles and large quantities of 7.62mm NATO and 12.7mm ammunition were reportedly recovered from them.
