President Muhammadu Buhari has urged the country’s police authorities to ensure transparency in the fresh recruitment of policemen into the force. He also asked them to prune the number of policemen attached to VIPs as orderlies. The president said this during a meeting with officials of the Ministry of Police Affairs and Police Service Commission in Abuja, Nigeria’s federal capital.
“You must ensure that the recruitment process is transparent. Those who will conduct the recruitment must be above board. It should not be heard that they receive gratification or extort money from those who want to enlist in the police”, Buhari stated.
The president enjoined the officials to look into issues in the promotion of police officers, specifically those who have overstayed their ranks.
James Obiegbu, permanent secretary, ministry of police affairs, told the president inadequate police personnel, dwindling finances and non-rehabilitation of police training schools, among others, have hindered effective police work in the country.
