A man who claimed to be an official of the Lagos State Government, but declined to give his name, Friday morning at about 8 a.m, rammed his car into a building fence at Dipeolu Street, Off Awolowo Way, Ikeja.
The man, who drove a 1998 black Toyota Forerunner marked EKY 436 AJ, claimed to be heading to a stakeholders’ meeting, to be attended by Governor Akinwunmi Ambode. He claimed his vehicle suddenly developed a brake fault, which led to the accident.
A few minutes afterward, the governor drove along the same road seemingly heading towards the state secretariat. He waved at people, who cheered him, but the self-acclaimed state official said it was he the governor waved at.
It would later appear the man merely said so to have his way with the officers of the Lagos State Traffic Management Agency, LASTMA, at the scene. One of the LASTMA officers, Lasisi Giwa, was heard saying the car should be detained and the accident investigated.
But the purported official pleaded against such. He said to Giwa: “Do you want journalist to get here and start asking questions from a state official?”, but unknown to the men, Nigeria Newsbreak undercover was at the scene. The state official resorted to bribing the officers to have his way, an incident our correspondent witnessed. The other LASTMA officers at the scene wore name tags, such as Kazeem K, Quadri F, and Sodoki.
