Seirra Leon’s first lady, Sia Nyama Koromo, has relinquished her position as chairman, Africa’s first ladies to Aisha Buhari, wife of Nigeria’s president, Muhammadu Buhari. Garba Shehu, presidential spokesman, was quoted as saying in a report by the Vanguard. Shehu said the Nyama Koroma did so as “mark of respect to Aisha Buhari”. He said that and other matters on the role the president’s wife will be playing are still under consideration. Patience Jonathan was believed to have hurriedly organised an election, two weeks to her husband hand over, to pick her successor (Koroma). There were insinuations Patience made the move to shut Aisha Buhari out from becoming the African first ladies club head.
“President Buhari promised that there would be a clear difference between the role played by his wife during his tenure and that played by many previous First Ladies”, Shehu stated.
“All that ostentation, ubiquitousness and arrogance we have come to expect from the office are over and done with. Change has come.
“The ideal platform from which she will be useful to Nigeria’s women and children is still being thought out. Once this has been concluded on, Mrs. Buhari’s role will become clearer to all Nigerians. There will be nothing shady or hidden about it. There will be no access to public funds. It will be purely private and voluntary”.
He also debunked allegations that the president’s wife had moved into the first lady office used by former President Goodluck Jonathan’s wife, Patience.
