Three suspected drug traffickers have been arrested at the Murtala Mohammed Airport(MMIA), Lagos State, after swallowing 233 wraps of powdery substances that tested positive for cocaine with weight of 5.05 kilogrammes, by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), during an outward screening of passengers.
Two of the suspects, Obiekwe Frank Chuma and Okoye Jacob Okwuchukwu, were going to Hong Kong while Chukwunyere Prince Emmanuel was caught on his way to Italy.
Obiekwe Frank Chuma, 47, who said that he used to be a textile merchant before he suffered financial setback stated that in the process of looking for assistance, he was introduced into drug trafficking and was given the drug in a restaurant in Onitsha and promised $10,000.
Okoye Jacobs Okuchukwu, 43, said that he met his sponsor at a wedding ceremony who promised him a million naira if he swallowed the drugs, which he agreed to because he needed the money to continue his textile business
Chukwunyere Prince Emmanuel, 39, said it was his first time of smuggling drugs and he was promised 4,000 euros which he needed to settle his bills.
NDLEA commander at the Lagos Airport, Mr. Hamza Umar, who gave a breakdown of the seized drugs, declared that the suspects have voluntarily recorded their statements and investigators are working on their cases.
