President Michel Kafando and Prime Minister Isaac Zida have been detained at a cabinet meeting at the presidential palace in the capital, Ouagadougou. The detention comes after a truth and reconciliation commission had recommended that the presidential guard (RSP) be disbanded. The head of transitional parliament, Moumina Cheriff Sy, confirmed the incident in a statement made available to journalists.
Several radio stations have been taken off, raising fears that the situation may lead to violence. The intentions of the guards remain unknown. Speculations have it that it could be a protest to the alleged planning of disbanding the unit or they may be trying to seize power.
Sy has said that the military have started negotiating their release. (BBC)
