A court has heard how Lucky Esonahae, 37, set his wife on fire for alleged infidelity while she was seven months pregnant. Esonahae was reported to have, on the fateful day, locked his wife, Stella Issac, up in a room, doused her in Kerosene and set a fire to her. Neighbours in their Uwelu Quarters, who heard the lady's scream from the room, rushed to force the door open, found her distressed and took her to a hospital. Upon his arrest and arraignment by the Police in Benin state, the capital of Edo state, Esonahae admitted to the wrongdoing, but pleaded for mercy. His plea, however, did not cut an ice with the magistrate, who sentenced him to five years jail. Magistrate Igho Braimoh said Esonahae's action "leaves much to be desired" before sending him to the prison.
The prosecuting officer, Sergeant Ganiyu Yahya, told the court that the incident occurred at Uwelu Quartres in Benin, and was reported by the victim, Stella Isaac, on July 6, the same day it occurred.
