Say The Truth, Or Become An Inmate In … – Soyinka Bombs Oyinlola

The war of words between Nobel Laureate, Professor Wole Soyinka, and former Osun state Governor Olagunsoye Oyinlola continued during the week. Oyinlola had responded recently to Soyinka’s claims that he was impersonating him as the chairman of the Centre for Black Culture and International Understanding, CBCIU, located in Osogbo, the capital of Osun state.  While Soyinka claimed Oyinlola was obsessed with owning the centre and paraded himself as its president at the United Nations Organisation for Education, Science and Culture, UNESCO, headquarters, the former governor alleged Soyinka rebuffed entreaties to have the dispute over the centre’s leadership resolved amicably between them. In his response, Soyinka fired a blistering statement, in which he asked Oyinlola to either recant his statement and say the truth, or take his “well-earned place in company of the current inmates of the republic of liars.” Soyinka described Oyinlola’s accusation that he never wanted the establishment of the centre from the onset as a “thickening tissue of lies”. Oyinlola also alleged Soyinka’s anger towards him as a case of “transferred aggression”, engendered by his closeness to former President Olusegun Obasanjo. Oyinlola advised Soyinka to reconcile with his kinsman (Obasanjo) rather than castigating him because of his closeness to the former president.
The centre was set up in 2009, to elevate black culture by focusing on its recovery, preservation, promotion, and utilisation of its enduring ways of being for the purposes of holistic development, appreciation, and international understanding.
