The Williams sisters’ much-debated quarter-final produced a hard-fought and absorbing match, but in the end a predictable result: a 6-2, 1-6, 6-3 victory for Serena, the world No. 1.
The margins were slim, as the final tally of 76 points to Serena and 75 to Venus should suggest. Serena won the first and third sets to carry herself to within two victories of the grand slam.
Donald Trump was in the stands to watch – and was booed for his trouble by the 23,771 fans on Arthur Ashe Stadium.
Other faces in the crowd included Kim Kardashian and her protege Kylie Jenner, as well as actors Candice Bergen and Alan Cumming.
On her defeat to her younger sister, Serena, Venus said,"I just told her I was so happy for her,” Venus explained afterwards, “and after that I don’t remember what I said." (Telegraph)
