Atletico Madrid winger Antoine Griezmann has parted ways with his agents, Grupo Santos. The Frenchman refused to extend his contract with them saying he needed to start making decisions himself.
“From now I’m going to operate without an agent,” he told French sports daily L’Equipe.
“But I will always have the advice of my father and also my mentor, Eric Olhats.”
Olhats discovered Griezmann by accident after he had stopped over in Paris on his way to Spain. His friends had convinced him to stay and watch a youth competition the pacey winger was participating in. He had seen Griezmann as a bright prospect. Despite being small – “too small” for most French clubs – Griezmann stood out. Although much of that was because, as a trialist, he didn’t have the club tracksuit and was instead strolling around Paris Saint-Germain’s Camp des Loges training ground wearing a yellow t-shirt with ‘Jamaica’ emblazoned across it. Olhats watched him for 10 minutes before being convinced he was a future star.
“I no longer believed [he would make it as a professional] when he was spotted by Eric,” his father Alain told L’Equipe magazine earlier this year.
“I was sceptical at the time, but Eric convinced us to let him go to San Sebastian.”
Griezmann had turned down Mnchester United to stay at Atletico under Diego Simeone’s watch. With his new contract pegging his release clause at 100 million euros, top European clubs would be lurking when the window opens net summer.
