MTN has denied it illegally repatriated $13.92 billion from Nigeria. The allegation was made by Senator Dino Melaye, who also indicted Minister of Trade and Investment Okechukwu Elelamah as being complicit in the alleged act.

“The allegations made against MTN are completely unfounded and without any merit,” MTN Nigeria chief executive Ferdi Moolman said in brief statement. Following a senate debate on the allegation, a committee was directed to investigate. Melaye, a controversial lawmaker, had claimed the humongous money was repatriated over a 10-year period.

“Between 2006 and 2016, through four Nigerian Banks and a serving minister of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, MTN moved over 12 billion dollars out of Nigeria.

“That is about half of our external reserves,” he said.
