A man has reportedly fled abandoning wife, Uzoamaka Onu, at the New Mayor Hospital and Fertility Centre, Nkpor, Anambra State over a N520,000 bill for a surgery on her breast. The 39-year-old mother of seven had undergone a successful surgery to treat the cancer ravaging her right breast. The surgery had led to the complete removal of the affected breast. Onu, who is a food vendor, told Vanguard that she had been in the hospital for four months over the inability of her husband, who is now at large, to settle the bills.
She said her husband, a rat poison seller, had stopped visiting her after the surgery. She, however, refused to pass blames on him saying they had suffered together since 2013 when the problem started.
She told Vanguard that the problem had started when she was feeling pains in her lungs. She said she had visited patent medicine stores but, rather than find a solution, had compounded the problems.
She said N750,000 was the total cost of the surgery and that her family had paid N230,000. She appealed to well-meaning Nigerians to come to her aid.
The Medical Director of the hospital, Dr. Ben Ossai, confirmed the incident, saying her husband had not visited for four months and they suspect he had absconded.
