Saudi Police Arrest Nigerian Pilgrim Over Alleged Theft

Police in Saudi Arabia have arrested a Nigerian pilgrim over theft allegations levied against him. The pilgrim, from Sokoto, was arrested during the circumambulation ((Tawaf) of the Ka’aba at the Holy Mosque after other pilgrims caught him trying to pick some money which had been reported lost. The suspect has been detained after efforts to prove his innocence proved futile due to the language barrier.

The National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON) confirmed the incidence and said talks are ongoing with Saudi authorities to secure his release. He was said to have missed the hajj rites. Chairman of the commission, Abdullahi Mukhtar therefore urged Nigerian pilgrims to avoid picking anything found at the Holy Mosque to avoid the repeat of the case yet to be resolved.
