Ex-Bundesliga Midfielder Faces Jail Over Terrorism Charges

By Adebayo Williams

A former midfielder in the Bundesliga Deniz Naki will face court this week after he was accused of spreading terrorist propaganda. The former Saint Pauli and Paderborn player was said to have “incited hatred and hostility towards a group by another group who bore different characteristics due to its region, to undermine the region’s locals’ trust in the Turkish Republic and overtly make propaganda for the Kurdish Workers’ Party (PKK) terror organization,” Dogan, a Turkish news agency said.

The 27-year-old, who now plays for Turkish side Amedspor, has denied any wrongdoing saying his intentions were to spend messages of peace. The player had earlier been banned for 12 games and fined by the Turkish Football Federation for posting idealogical propaganda after his team won the cup against Buraspor in January.
