A man who stabbed a school girl 145 times and watched her die is to serve a minimum of 27 years in jail. The convict, John Leathem, bagged a life sentence for the gruesome murder of the 15-year-old schoolgirl, Paige Doherty, whose body he later dumped in woodland. The attack occurred behind Leathem shop in Clydebank, West Dunbartonshire.
Leathem – married with two children – said he murdered the girl to prevent her from reporting that he touched and avoid being put on sex offenders’ watch.
Trial judge Lady Rae described the crime as a ‘savage and frenzied’ attack, and the killing as ‘truly reprehensible and impossible to comprehend’.
“It is impossible to comprehend how an apparently happily married man, with a young child, who is running a successful business, is capable of such an horrific level of violence,” the judge added.
Many at the sentencing hurled invectives at Leathem, as he was being led away.
Leathem was given a three year discount on a 30 year sentence for an early plea.
