A man is currently in police custody in the Ifo area of Ogun State after he was caught having sex with another man’s wife. The man, Lawal Bankole, was said to have been caught by the woman’s husband, Abdullahi Muhammed. Muhammed told police he had gone to Lagos Island only to return to find Bankole making love to his wife on their matrimonial bed. A scuffle ensued between the men before neighbours came to settle them. He escaped while the matter was being settled.
Muhammed told Punch that he was able to snatch his driver’s license, ATM card and phone from his pocket while he fled. He said he had used the items as evidence at the police station. He accused Bankole of exploiting his wife’s mental illness.
The woman, identified as Tope, told police that the suspect, a truck driver, had come to their house and given her N200. She said he had come back shortly to have sex with her. She stated that while he was at the act, she could not utter a word arousing suspicion he had used charms on her.
A human rights lawyer, Isaac Durowoju, said the accused had been boasting that nothing would happen to him, adding that the Investigating Police Officer had not treated the case with the seriousness it deserved. He said the woman’s husband had refused mediation because he was not sure of the suspect’s HIV status. He also said in his culture, if any man makes love to another person’s wife, that woman from that point ceases to be his wife. He also speculated that the suspect was diabolical. But he said he could not abandon his wife because of her mental condition.
The Police Public Relations Officer, Ogun State, Abimbola Oyeyemi, confirmed the incident, adding that the suspect would be charged to court.
