No Special Recognition For Lagos – Senate

A bill seeking special recognition for Lagos State has been rejected, but not after driving mainly northern senators into a fury. The bill, sponsored by Senator Oluremi Tinubu, claims Lagos is entitled to one per cent of the nation’s revenue. Senator Olusola Adeyeye, the Chief Whip, contributing to the debate queried the subsidization of the Federal Capital Territory by the Federal Government while Lagos pays for same government services. Adeyeye also wondered why VAT paid on alcohol are shared to some northern states where it’s sale is banned. The debate had gone until Adeyeye pressed the red button by describing the FCT as “a rotten pampered child,” thereby drawing the ire of many northern senators. The debate was eventually put to a voice vote by presiding Deputy Senate President Ike Ekweremadu, and consequently thrown out.
