Spain captain Sergio Ramos played spoiler for his own country in their World Cup qualifying series in Italy. Ramos’ penalty gift to the hosts spoilt what would have been a first victory for La Roja on Italian grounds since 1971. The Real Madrid defender, looking out of sorts all evening, gifted the Italians an 87th minute penalty which Daniele De Rossi calmly slotted past David De Gea.
The game with Spain having 80 percent possession had looked settled after Vitolo’s 55th minute goal but Ramos’ foul on Eder made all the difference as the Azurris rescued a point from the resulting spot kick.
Ramos has conceeded four penalties already this season but had been able to cancel them out with goals on the other end. His recent fail with Spain is the first time this season his misdeed is causing a major upset to his team.
