Statistics have shown that Argentina need their captain Lionel Messi to win matches. The Barcelona ‘magician’ had retired from international duty following his country’s loss of the Copa America trophy to Chile. Messi had stood by his decision until the country’s president, family and fans had intervened. He decided to return to the team’s setup in time for the World Cup qualifying series.
In recent weeks, since Messi has been out to injury, the Albiceleste have recorded a draw and a loss in dramatic fashion. Last Tuesday, Argentina had to scrape deep into their magic hat to pull out a draw against Venezuela. On Wednesday, however, they lost their magic to go down to a home defeat in the hands of Paraguay.
The team, without their talisman, picked just six points out of a possible 18 scoring just four goals and conceding six.
