A trigger-happy policeman disrupted the heroes’ welcome of the Super Eagles at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja on Monday night. The plain cloth policeman was said to have stormed the area in search of the League Management Company boss, Shehu Dikko, who had been declared wanted by a Federal High Court sitting in Jos. The policeman reportedly said he was acting on the directives of the Abuja Police Commissioner who demanded to see him.
Nigeria Football Federation President Amaju Pinnick had pleaded with him to respect the joyous mood of the fans and the players. Vanguard reports that the policeman had said he did not care about the fans or the players. He was asked for a warrant which he could not produce. He also threatened to shoot anyone who stood in his way. While he was being calmed down, he reportedly drew his gun and shot in the air. The fans and players scampered for safety ending the welcome ‘party’. It was said that policemen at the airport then persuaded him to be calm and keep his weapon.
