Nigeria’s representatives at the Women’s U-17 World Cup, the Flamingoes, were beaten by their Korea DPR counterparts in their final game of the group stages. The Bala Nikyu led team finished the tournament without scoring a single goal to make the outing the worst since their debut in the tournament.
Korea’s Ri Hae Yon netted a hat trick to spell the end for the team at the Amman International Stadium in Jordan. The Flamingoes had looked the likely to score in the early minutes when Rasheedat Ajibade’s blistering pace through Korea’s defence and shot was saved by goalkeeper Ok Kum Ju.
Korea DPR took the lead in the 30th minute as Kyong Hui’s long cross disrupted Nigeria’s backline as Ri fired past hapless goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie.
The Flamingoes head back to Nigeria at the bottom of Group C with one point in three games while Brazil, who lost 2-1 to England, will also return home. Korea and England progress to the knockout phase of the tournament.
