W/Cup Qualifier: Rohr’s Men Beat Zambia

By Adebayo Williams

Gernot Rohr’s Super Eagles were 2-1 winners over Zambia at the Levy Mwanawasa Stadium, Ndola in a World Cup qualifying series on Sunday. The Eagles took the lead through Arsenal’s Alex Iwobi in the 32nd minute. The 20-year-old scored his first international goal since his debut in October, 2015 after a defensive error from the Zambians. Wedson Nyirenda’s men got another shocker in the 42nd minute when Brown Ideye gave Manchester City’s Kelechi Iheanacho a pass ┬áto score the second for the Eagles. Iheanacho dribbled past three Zambian defenders before slotting home three minutes from half time.

The Chipolopolo looked better in the second half forcing goalkeeper Carl Ikeme to saves in the opening minutes. They got back in the game through a goal from Mbesuma in the 71st minute. Nigeria’s Kenneth Omeruo had made a defensive error leading to the goal. The Zambians continued their search for an equaliser but were tamed by a resilient Super Eagles team hanging on to claim maximum points in the away encounter.

The Super Eagles will play Algeria at home on 7 November while Zambia will take their ticket pursuit to Cameroon.
