Bundesliga side Werder Bremen have joined the race to sign Arsenal’s captain Per Mertesacker. The German defender is in the final year of his contract at the Emirate Stadium and has been out of action due to a knee injury he sustained during a pre-season game.
Bremen general manager Frank Baumann, who played alongside Mertesacker at the Weser-Stadion, believes that a return to the club is possible.
“I could well imagine Per at Werder,” he told Bild.
Bundesliga 2 side Hannover also confirmed interest in the 32-year-old. Mertesacker spent his early careers at the club an d could be tempted to return.
Mertesacker, who won 104 caps for Germany before retiring soon after their World Cup triumph in 2014, has himself said that he could be tempted to move back to his homeland. Although the Managing Director admits it could be tough to sign him because of their lower league status, he is optimistic a move can be agreed in future.
